Alan Fraser was in Miami in December 2008 where he had the chance to play the Horowitz Steinway, a completely extraordinary instrument. Even the cheap handycam microphone picks up its glorious tonal palette and expressivity. Fraser writes about this instrument in the last chapter of Honing the Pianistic Self-Image, but here we let the music speak for itself, either here with the second movement from Mozart’s Sonata in G major, K.283 or below with the elegiac Mazurka in A minor, Op. 17 #4 of Chopin.
